Le Cabaret le Chat Noir
This lithograph "Tournée du Chat Noir" was performed on wove paper in 1896.
Since its creation by Rodolphe Salis in 1881, the Cabaret Le Chat Noir becomes a veritable institution in Montmartre. In 1896, his shadows theatre is so successful that Salis sends a troupe on tour. This poster was commissioned to announce one of these tours. The remarkably stylized Chat Noir, standing out on a pale and set background value by red beaches, evokes that attractive and mysterious theatre of shadows and literary side in establishments such as Le Chat Noir. Steinlen created for Montmartre a simple yet effective icon symbolizes the end century Paris.
Dès sa création par Rodolphe Salis en 1881, le Chat Noir devient une véritable Institution à Montmartre. En 1896, son théâtre d'ombres connaît un tel succès que Salis envoie une troupe en tournée. Cette affiche a été commandée pour annoncer l'une de ces tournées. Le chat noir remarquablement stylisé, se détachant sur un fond pâle et mis en valeur par des plages de rouge, évoque le côté attrayant et mystérieux du théâtre d'ombres et du milieu littéraire dans les établissements comme le Chat Noir. Steinlen a créé pour Montmartre une icône simple mais efficace, qui encore aujourd'hui symbolise le Paris fin de siècle.

Born in Lausanne (in Switzerland) in 1859, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen settled in Paris in 1881, where he worked as a painter, printmaker, poster designer and illustrator. After a visit to the Chat Noir, founded by fellow Swiss expatriate Rodolphe Salis. Steinlen became an active member of the cabaret's creative circle and an illustrator for its journal. Friends and competitors, Toulouse-Lautrec and Steinlen often vied for celebrity poster commissions from performers such as singer Yvette Guilbert. Steinlen also illustrated the two-volume song and monologue compilation Dans la rue by Aristide Bruant, one of Toulouse-Lautrec's supporters. He died in Paris in 1923.
Né à Lausanne (en Suisse) en 1859, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen s'établit à Paris en 1881 et y exerce les activités de peintre, d'imprimeur, d'affichiste et d'illustrateur. Après une visite au Chat Noir, fondé par son compatriote d'origine Rodolphe Salis, Steinlen prend une part active au cercle créatif du cabaret, devenant même l'illustrateur pour son journal. À la fois amis et concurrents, Toulouse-Lautrec et Steinlen se disputent souvent la création d'affiches destinées à la promotion de vedettes du café-concert, telle la chanteuse Yvette Guilbert. Steinlen illustre également Dans la rue, une compilation en deux volumes de chansons et de monologues d'Aristide Bruant, partisan de Toulouse-Lautrec. Il est décédé à Paris, en 1923.
